🏭 3D Printing vs. Traditional Manufacturing: Why I Print Instead of Machine

People ask me all the time: “Gage, why don’t you just get these parts made the normal way, like at a machine shop?” Great question! Let me break down why 3D printing beats traditional manufacturing for a lot of projects — and where the old-school way still wins.

⚡ Speed: Hours, Not Weeks

If you need a custom part made the traditional way (like CNC machining or injection molding), you usually need special tooling built first. That can take days or even weeks, and it costs a lot before you even get your first piece! With 3D printing, I design something on my computer at night and it can be printing on my Bambu Lab printer within minutes. No tooling, no waiting on a machine shop — just hit print.

💰 Cost: No Expensive Molds Required

Traditional manufacturing (especially injection molding) needs a mold, and molds are expensive — sometimes thousands of dollars, and that’s before you make a single part! That only makes sense if you’re making thousands of the same thing. With 3D printing, I don’t need any mold at all. I just need the filament (like PLA, PETG, or TPU) and my printer does the rest. That’s why 3D printing is perfect for one-off parts, small batches, and custom orders.

🔁 Iteration: Fail Fast, Fix Fast

This is my favorite part. When I’m designing something new, I don’t always get it right the first time. With traditional manufacturing, changing your design after the tooling is built can mean starting all over — and paying for a whole new mold. With 3D printing, if a part doesn’t fit right, I just tweak the file and print again. I’ve redesigned prints five or six times in a single afternoon before landing on the perfect version. That’s exactly how I nailed the fit and flex on my articulated dragons — lots of little test prints along the way.

I’ll be honest — traditional manufacturing isn’t going anywhere, and it shouldn’t! If you need thousands of the exact same part made from metal, injection-molded plastic, or something super high-strength, traditional methods are usually cheaper per-piece at huge volumes and can use materials 3D printers can’t match yet. The real magic is knowing which tool fits the job. For big factory runs, go traditional. For fast, flexible, custom, and small-batch work? That’s where I come in.
